John Barker PhD – born and bred in Tooting Bec in South London; English Lecturer at London University – lives a happy and contented life with his wife Fay in a flat in Putney. In the autumn of 1997, Fay tells John she’s pregnant.Disaster strikes in January 1998, when Fay has a miscarriage. The trauma of losing their child changes Fay’s personality altogether. Their marriage crashes irreparably in November, when John arrives home to find Fay in bed with his banker.In 1999 – in an attempt to sort himself out – John leaves his post in London temporarily, to uphold a three year post at Lund University in Sweden.Among his students is a young girl, Rebecca, who will shake his old-fashioned, rigid notion of love and sex dramatically.His quest for peace of mind takes him on an odyssey from Lapland in the north of Sweden, to Stockholm, Denmark and France.After roller coasting between elated euphoria and deepest depression during his three years in Lund, John returns to London to pick up where he left off.
